I was born in savannah, Georgia but lived on Daufuskie Island, SC until the age of 13. Due to very limited ferry transportation, I had to leave the island to live with my cousin Edward Johnson to further my education. I graduated from Beaufort High School in 2005 and then University of North Carolina at Pembroke in 2014 with a bachelors in Sociology and a Doctorate in Humanitarianism. Additionally, I served in the United States Army for 8 years.
There are five generations of my family who lived on Daufuskie Island: Henry and Lizzie Bell Hamilton (maternal grandparents) the parents of Linda Hamilton Simmons (mother); Walter and Agnes Simmons (paternal grandparents) the parents of Walter Simmons Jr., my father. Last but not least I cherish my one son, Jeremiah Smith, who will continue to carry my families legacy. During my time on Daufuskie Island I lived with my father, Walter Simmons Jr., who built a small restaurant, Simmons Place, in 1986. I am current owner of the restaurant, now leased under the name of “Lucy Bells Café” was listed in the Deep South Magazine as one of the number one American cuisine restaurants in the low country.
